Fittingly translated as the ‘Abode of the Goddess’, Kali Niketan was built as a summer house on a 60 acre plot by Maharaja Fatehsinhji in the late 19th century. He was a descendant of Chauhan dynasty of the legendary Prithviraj Chauhan, who once ruled Delhi. Formerly known as Nahar Villa, the palace was renamed to Kali Niketan to honour Goddess Mahakali. Fond of art and architecture, the rulers of Chhotaudepur were involved in building a number of gorgeous palaces, one of which is the Kali Niketan. It is now run as a hotel by owners Maharaj Sajjan Singh, his wife Rani Devendra Kumari and son Rajkumar Udayraj Singh. It is well reputed for its lip-smacking cuisine, warm hospitality and beautiful open spaces filled with mango orchards.
The heritage home offers a memorable stay with its serene ambiance and numerous contemporary comforts. The hotel features many antiquities and the grand walls are adorned with huge family portraits. There are two onsite lounges where the guests can spend their leisure time. The airconditioned guestrooms are warm and welcoming, complete with a fourposter bed, lamp, wardrobes, TV and other amenities. All meals are prepared by the family cooks with great care and attention to the various requirements of the guests.

Colourful tribal haats (weekly markets which sell handmade items made by the tribal people) can be spotted in and around the town and at nearby villages as well. The town has interesting old buildings and a tribal museum for photography enthusiasts. You can even visit the famous Statue of Unity if you happen to travel from Vadodara.
