Dairy Museum & Amul Dairy Factory Anand

About the location: Amul’s museum throws light on the intersection of the freedom struggle and the milk revolution of Anand, and charts the trajectory of the milk co-operative ever since it was formed. A gallery with floor to ceiling images and an audiovisual show (Hindi only) helps journey through the years that Amul has been around.

The two-hour guided walk through Amul’s butter and dry milk plant in Anand, offers a unique peek into the complex operations, technology-backed operations and superlative laced discourse on Amul’s grand statistics. The company has 78 plants and handles 280-lakh litres every day that are transported by GPS fitted trucks and affects the life of more than 37 lakh small and mid-level milk producers in India. Walk through the cleaning, fat separation, standardisation and packaging units, as well as walls plastered with photographs of Indian and International luminaries.

Brief History: The museum is also known as Dr V Kurien’s Museum and was inaugurated on 26th November 2000 to mark the 80th birthday of the man who revolutionised the concept for milk producers all through India. Dr Verghese Kurien has been given many monikers, of which ‘Father of the White Revolution’ and ‘Milkman of India’ are most popular. He was the man behind Operation Flood and the billion-litre idea that shot India from a milk deficient nation to the world’s largest producer. Kurien pioneered the effort of replicating the Anand model to villages all over India. His birthday, 26th November, is celebrated as Milk Day in India.
